Women in Space
Anita Gale is a Senior Project Engineer for a major space contractor, with 35 years of experience working on the Space Shuttle program, mostly in process improvements for Payload & Cargo Integration. She is currently working on one of the Commercial Crew Development teams selected by NASA to design and build America’s next crewed space vehicle.
In the webinar Anita will talk about her career in the space sector. She will also talk about how in 1984, she co-founded Space Settlement Design Competitions, industry simulation games that engage students in designing future space settlements. The Competitions have evolved into an international activity involving over 1000 students each year on six continents.
Tanya Shaban is an Aerospace Engineering student from the University of Manchester who was driven to a career in engineering by her desire to bring creative and technical skills together in order to solve problems. Whether it is an item of clothing or a nano-satellite deployer, design is where Tanya's talents lie.
Tanya is currently undertaking a year in industry as a nuclear engineer before she returns to complete her degree and
In the webinar Tanya will talk about her experience at university, how she strives to encourage young people with diverse backgrounds and talents to consider STEM careers while demonstrating the importance of creativity in technical roles.
Return to the Moon
After over 20 years working at Sony Games, on some of the world’s most popular games, Jason Riley decided to leave the games industry and start a new career where he could combine his two passions - space and 3D Visualisation.
In this webinar Jason will talk about his journey from game development to working on projects with NASA and some of the world’s leading space architecture firms. Jason will also discuss how some of the world’s leading space organisations are increasingly using 3D modelling and Visualisation to design and test space technology systems as they prepare to return astronauts to the moon and then onto Mars.
Touch Immersion
Touch Immersion are an immersive engineering start-up that uses virtual and augmented reality as tools to increase the scalability and proficiency of training for STEM higher education, space and engineering companies.
Tal Horton-Horsman and Campbell Drummond, the founders of Touch Immersion, will talk about how they set up Touch Immersion while still at university and about the increasing importance of immersive and virtual reality across the space sector.
Jason, Tal and Campbell will then talk about the advice he can give to young people with an interest in 3D modelling, virtual reality and game development who are interested in careers in the space and related sectors.
Women in Space
Maruška Strah has been passionate about space and space law ever since she read her first chapter on international space law. Her interest only deepened during her work at the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, where she gained significant insight in the work of both, public and private sector involved with the space industry. Her main area of interest is Space Traffic Management.
In the webinar Maruška will talk about both her work in space law and how her enthusiasm and passion for space has led her to bring space closer to people, especially youth and women.
Alina Vizireanu is a Geospatial and IT Consultant specialised in working with data received from the Geospatial Satellites that survey the earth from Space. Alina is also the membership manager for the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC); a United Nations backed organisation and network which aims to represent university students and young space professionals ages 18-35 to the United Nations, space agencies and industry.
In the webinar Alina will talk about how her passion for geography has led to a successful career working in the space sector and how she has recently set up her own Consultancy partnership - www.Avinterra.com
Maruška and Alina will then talk about the advice they can give to young women who are interested in careers in the space and related sectors.
Return to the Moon
Dr Chris Gaffney, Lecturer in Integrative Physiology at Lancaster University, was part of the first UK-led experiment onboard the international space station; The Molecular Muscle Experiment (MME). The MME project aims to understand the impact space travel has on astronauts’ muscles and has involved sending worms on a SpaceX rocket from Florida’s Kennedy Space Centre to the International Space Station.
In the webinar, Chris will talk about the MME project and how this kind or research is critical if humans are to travel to and create settlements on the Moon and then on Mars.
Dr Nicol Caplin is a Deep Space Exploration Scientist at the European Space Agency’s Department for Human Spaceflight and Robotic Exploration.
In the webinar Nichol will talk about her early work on the biological effects of low-dose radiation on plants and how this then extended beyond Earth to look at seeds that had been exposed to elevated radiation doses and microgravity conditions on board the International Space Station (ISS). Nichole will also talk about how she is now been deeply involved in the scientific coordination of experiments destined for the ISS and beyond low Earth orbit on the planned lunar Gateway facility.
Chris and Nicol will then talk about the advice they can give to young people with an interest in biological and sports science who are interested in careers in the space and related sectors.
Women in Space
Dr Alice Gorman is an internationally recognised leader in the field of space archaeology and author of the award-winning book Dr Space Junk vs the Universe: Archaeology and the Future (MIT Press, 2019).
In the webinar Alice will talk about her research which focuses on the archaeology and heritage of space exploration, including space junk, planetary landing sites, off-earth mining, and space habitats. She will also talk about how in collaboration with NASA and Chapman University, she is part of a team conducting the first archaeological study of the International Space Station.
Chiara Chiesa is an International PR and Space Technology Commercialization Transfer advisor. She helps to infuse space technology into the commercial sector, connecting people, start-ups, companies, and institutions within the aerospace and New Space domain.
In the webinar Chiara will talk about her work on space PR and technology, the NASA Space Apps Challenge and her role as a Mentor and role model for Space4Women Network initiative, a program by UNOOSA (United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs) to inspire girls and women to pursue STEM and space careers.
Alice and Chiara will then talk about the advice they can give to young women who are interested in careers in the space and related sectors.
